Laying of Foundation Stone

The Lord Bishop of Chichester, The Rt Rev'd Dr. Martin Warner visited St. George's on Thursday 20th June 2013 to lay the Foundation Stone of the new Rectory.

Following a service in St. George's at which the children from Brede Primary School sang, the Bishop blessed the Foundation Stone and then joined the congregation for a drink and snacks in the church.

Father Martin Harper was inducted as Rector of Brede and Udimore at a service by the Bishop of Lewes on 7th July 2008.

The son of an army officer who later became a clergyman, Martin's initial career was as a Quantity Surveyor qualifying in 1975 and achieving FRICS status in 1988.

At the same time as working as a Chartered Surveyor, he was ordained as a Deacon in 1985 and as a Priest in 1986.

In 1995 he made a further change of career by taking his PGCE and went into teaching at Bexhill High where he remained until 2008.

Martin is a member of the Scout Fellowship and he and his wife, Vicky (a Scout Manager) help raise funds for an orphanage in Kenya and, in 2004, built a new classroom and carried out other works at the Scout Centre in Siaya.

Martin is also on the Board of the Fellowship of St. Nicholas, a children's charity based in St. Leonards on Sea, and the Treasurer of the Surviving Christmas project in Hastings.

With a wealth of experience behind him (being a teacher has given him an immense insight of human nature!) we welcome him and Vicky to the Parish and wish them a long and happy stay.

Rev'd John Lee

It is with great sadness but also with thanks for his life and ministry that we record the death of Fr. John Lee on 27th September 2016.

Fr. John's funeral was at St. Mary's Church, Chiddinstone, where he was once Vicar, and he is buried in the churchyard there.

He will be sorely missed by many, includiing those in Brede.  May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
